McDorman Private Collection auctioned off !

It
was a sunny but cold day in Canal Winchester, Ohio today under
the tents as the auction of 150 of Bob McDorman's cars from
his private collection and many pieces of memorabilia, neon
dealer signs, and car parts were auctioned off today at the
Bob McDorman Chevrolet dealership under the Mecum hammer.
In that collection were some very nice Pace cars that we will
be covering here.
The
car collection was made up of mostly very low mileage, hardly
or never driven "new" Chevrolet cars and trucks,
and Corvettes, but every now and then you would see something
special, even a lawn tractor ! Many of the cars in the collection
were Serial number 1, 2, or 3, or "last vin of the year",
or even rarer, like the 999,999th Corvette built or having
famous previous owners, like Rosemary Clooney, Mario Andretti,
John Mellencamp, or George Strait. Many were still on MSO
and were never dealer prepped since they still had their original
shipping plastic protection on the seats and dash.
The
most highly visible Corvettes in the collection were "Bunkie"
Knudsen's 1963 styling car and his wife's pink 1964, bringing
in $400,000 and $280,000 respectively and the Bill Mitchell
Experimental Stingray XX concept 1964, which sold at $160,000
(plus buyers fees).
The
auction kicked off promptly at 10am with "lots"
of memorabilia signs and toys,and vintage neon signs from
Chevrolet, Pontiac, and Oldsmobile dealerships. Some of the
larger pieces sold for over $30,000!
The
cars came to the block starting at noon, and were completed
around 5pm, when the auction turned back once again to the
remaining memorabilia. Many of the traditional "big names"
in the Corvette world were present to get their piece of history
for their own collections, museums, or dealers to add to their
"for sale" inventory.
